NEW LONDON – When it comes to state tournament baseball, all a squad has to do is bounce into an opponent’s top pitcher and quickly, the promise of a long playoff run fades ever so quickly.
And for the American Legion baseball squad from Bristol, New London’s top chucker was just too tough to overcome in first round action.
Bristol played its final game of the season on the road and dropped a 7-0 decision to New London from Sal Amanti field on Sunday, July 20.
Post 2, the 15th rated team in the Northern Division, ended its campaign at 20-15-1 while New London – ranked 10th – improved to 22-9.
The game wasn’t easy as Bristol faced a very determined thrower in the form of Izzy Davila.
Davila pitched a three-hitter and simply kept his command until finally being relived late in the fray.
Davila struck out two with three walks over a very busy day of action.
Peter Aldrich zipped up three hits, including a three-run double in the second inning, and Davila doubled twice, drove in a run and also scored one.
Jeremy Santos blasted out two hits and scored a run while Gabriel Diaz tripled for New London.
Jerry LaPenta absorbed the loss on the mound but went seven plus innings for the Bristol club.
New London scooped up six runs on nine hits off LaPenta while he walked three and struck out two in the losing effort.
Troy Micale, Jake Martel, and Vinnie Nocera came up with the three lone hits for Bristol.
Credit belonged to Davila as his defense – although he made two errors – kept Bristol from putting runs on in scoring positions.
Diaz led the first inning off with a triple and quickly scored on a sac fly to make it a 1-0 game.
Then over the next frame, New London gave its pitcher some breathing room.
In that fateful second inning, four runs scored to make it a 5-0 push for the home team.
Base-on-balls, batters hit by a pitch and then a three-RBI double did the trick for New London as the lead grew to five.
But LaPenta settled down and to his credit, didn’t allow much of anything until the eighth inning.
In the eighth, LaPenta put the first two runners he faced onboard and Micale was called to the mound in relief.
But off a combination of walks and hits, New London scored twice more to make it a 7-0 tilt Bristol was never able to dent.
Jarrett Michael, Vin Nocera, Eli Minella, Andrew Martin, and Jake Martel all played in their final Bristol Legion baseball games during the loss.
New London played at No. 7 Niantic in a second-round game at East Lyme High School the following day.
In that game, Niantic defeated New London by a 6-3 final to advance to a best-of-three series with Tolland.
Niantic played Tolland tough but fell two games to one.
A total of four runs separated the two teams over a very competitive series.
Post 2’s tournament run ends in New London

Mayor offers congrats to Arthur G. Russell for acquisition
Mayor Ken Cockayne visited with The Arthur G. Russell Company officials Wednesday to congratulate the 69-year-old manufacturing firm on its recent acquisition of Bodine Automation Technology, a move that will grow AGR’s workforce and could lead to expansion at its headquarters on Clark Avenue, said a press release from the mayor’s office.
Bodine Automation Technology is a division of Missouri-based DTE (Detroit Tool and Engineering), but it has its origins in Connecticut, established in 1932 as the Bodine Corporation in Bridgeport, said the news release. Bodine designs and builds automated assembly solutions ranging from stand-alone machines to fully integrated production systems for the medical device, consumer, food, and electronics industries.
Both AGR and Bodine are pioneers in the fields of automation, explained the mayor’s release. For many years, the release said, Bodine utilized technologies originally developed by AGR.
“The Arthur G. Russell Company has been an outstanding corporate citizen, and we applaud their efforts to expand and bring more high-tech manufacturing jobs to Bristol,” Cockayne said, according to the press release. “The leadership and hard work of companies such as AGR are turning the economy around. I am excited to continue to help this company grow in Bristol.”
The release said AGR officials explained AGR and Bodine will retain their distinctive brands to preserve their rich histories and strengths in the marketplace. “AGR will continue to support and service Bodine systems worldwide,” said Bill Mis, vice president of sales said in the mayor’s press release. “We welcome Bodine to our team and look forward to providing innovative solutions incorporating Bodine equipment and expertise.”
“This is a great story for AGR and a great story for Bristol,” said AGR President Mark Burzynski in the press release. He added that the company is planning the construction of a “clean” product development area and new training room with the possibility of a sizeable building expansion on Clark Avenue in the future, said the mayor’s news release.

City lures Farmington biz to business park

The Southeast Bristol Business Park will soon become the permanent home of a German-based company that specializes in spindle manufacturing and repair. GMN USA, a wholly-owned subsidiary of GMN, plans to relocate its U.S. operation to Lot no. 4 in the business park.
Last Tuesday, GMN USA President Gary Quirion, along with company owner Michael Loesch and Mayor Ken Cockayne established a real estate agreement for the lot, which is the third lot to be sold in the park.
Justin Malley, executive director of the Bristol Development Authority, said the discussion of GMN USA coming to Bristol began last summer when the company sent an e-mail to Bristol Development Authority and other communities in the area, looking for new space. Malley responded to the message immediately and met with the company the next day, informing GMN about the Southeast Bristol Business Park.
Although the company initially looked for an existing building, GMN USA decided to construct a 25,000 square foot facility to house 18 skilled employees. GMN also received approval to build a 20,000 square foot addition to the property in the future that can serve as the home for the company’s ball bearing operation currently based overseas.
Malley said once closing takes place on the property in September, construction will begin soon after that.
Established in 1998, GMN USA is currently located on New Britain Avenue in Farmington with core markets including aerospace and automobile sectors. GMN in Germany began in 1908, and produces high-performing machine-tool spindles, high precision ball bearings, non-contact seals, and drive technology components.
“They’re a global company, and those are the kinds of companies we want to encourage to sell in Bristol,” said Malley, adding how GMN can serve as a type of Bristol ambassador in the manufacturing community. “GMN, in this industry, is known for providing a high-end product.”
Quirion said GMN looks forward to the company’s new venture in Bristol.
He added the location of the business park serves the needs of GMN USA, especially since it is near the ESPN.
“It is just a business-friendly atmosphere,” said Quirion, a lifelong resident of Bristol. “A city that size has amenities that other communities didn’t have.”
Malley said the Bristol Development Authority board and other city departments have also played an instrumental role in the process of GMN’s relocation to Bristol. Long-time BDA Commissioner Mickey Goldwasser said Bristol serves as a great place to have a business, and the board could not be more excited about GMN’s decision to relocate there.
“They could have gone anywhere,” said Goldwasser, adding how GMN’s decision to expand shows optimism. “Bristol is in a great location—it’s easy to get to…it also to me, illustrates the willingness of Bristol and the city to work with them, and we’re excited that companies like them are buying into our message.”
Even before meeting with Bristol Development Authority, GMN USA established a relationship with the Bristol Technical Education Center, recruiting and hiring employees who are graduates from the school’s manufacturing training program. Quirion said GMN USA has been pleased with the work of the Bristol Tech graduates.
“Overall, we’re pleased with the candidacy that came in,” said Quirion.
“A lot of the times many of those students live in Bristol already, so you have that tie to Bristol,” said Malley.
“Just like we see the potential in GMN, GMN sees the potential in Bristol,” added Goldwasser, who has worked in the marketing industry for more than 25 years.
Located in the southeastern section of Bristol on the easterly side of Middle
Street (Route 220), the business park, which consists of 52 acres, has been open for the past ten years or so. Currently, said Malley, Precision Threaded Products occupies Lot No. 7 of the park with a building of 16,550 square feet. PTP manufactures precision parts, including fasteners and studs for the aerospace industry. CMI Specialty Products, a provider of electromagnetic iron strip and round bar for a variety of industries, is located at Lot No. 12. Operating out of a facility of 11,180 square feet, CMI is planning a 7,000 square foot building expansion. The BDA board also recently permitted manufacturer Total Wall Systems to work on the site design of Lot No. 6 for a period of time. Total Wall Systems manufactures exterior wall systems.
Malley said each lot in the park is priced competitively and there also are other incentives involved, including grant and tax abatement opportunities.
“We have some activity—I hope it’s a domino effect at this point,” said Malley. “As the economy revolves, we hope that companies that may have been holding off on an expansion or relocation are comfortable enough to look at not only relocation, but also new construction.”
Goldwasser said the timing of GMN USA’s relocation is on Bristol’s side, considering the business park did not have much luck when it initially began during a downward trend of the economy.
“There’s probably still a long way to go, but we are starting to see this renaissance or recovery going on in the economy,” said Goldwasser. “It was all about timing…the vision was to provide a great location for businesses to come into Bristol.”
Cellphone use while driving targeted by police thru Sept. 24
Bristol police have announced that they will be cracking down on districted driving starting tomorrow until Sept. 24.
Bristol police said the local department and law enforcement agencies across the state are joining with the state Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office to kick-off an Anti-Texting Enforcement Project. The project “U Drive. U Text. U Pay” will strictly enforce Connecticut’s law that prohibits motorist from texting and/or using hand-held cell phones while driving, said a press release from the police.
The crackdown will run from Wednesday, Sept. 3, through Wednesday, Sept. 24.
Connecticut has received federal funds that are being utilized to curb this unsafe driving behavior, explained the press release from the Bristol police. Law enforcement patrols in Bristol will target motorists who chose to ignore Connecticut’s hand held mobile phone ban, said the news release. The fines range from $150 for the first offense, $300 for the second violation, and $500 for each subsequent violation.
“Our goal is simple. We want to save lives by enforcing Connecticut’s tough penalties for distracted driving, namely texting while driving. During 2011, more than 3,300 people were killed across the nation in crashes involving distracted drivers,” said the Bristol police press release.
While the focused enforcement mobilization will end on Sept. 24, the news release said Bristol officers will continue to enforce Connecticut’s hand held mobile phone ban throughout the year.
“Law enforcement’s goal, with your help is to make Connecticut a safe place to live and travel,” said the press release.
No Bomb Threat Found at Green Hills School, But Student Charged
Police have arrested and charged a student at Green Hills School in connection with a suspected bomb threat left in the seventh grade bathroom yesterday, the Bristol Police Department stated in a news release.
The Bristol mayor’s office posted Wednesday on its Facebook page that there was another bomb threat at Green Hills. The posting from the mayor indicated that school officials were notified Wednesday afternoon of a bomb threat left in the seventh grade bathroom at the school, which was evacuated at that time. Although the posting indicated there was no perceived threat, buses were delayed.
Police said in the release that “there was no actual threat and no bomb team response was requested.” By the end of the school day, students left in an “orderly fashion,” the release stated. Police also said in the release that a student was found as a suspect, and was charged as a juvenile with second degree breach of peace and first degree threatening.
Police added that patrol units will have increased presence and will perform additional checks of the schools over the next several days, according to the release.

BRISTOL – The Bristol Sports Hall of Fame is proud to announce the Class of 2014.
This year’s inductees are Bob Montgomery, Linsie Esau, Ginny Ziogas Torreso, Bob McCabe, Bill Benecick, Steve Cooke, Greg Sassu, and Roger Godbout (deceased).
The BSHOF induction will be held on Friday, Nov. 21 at the Double Tree Hotel in Bristol.
Ticket information can be obtained by contacting Brian Farrell at (860)490-8486 or by email at bmfarrell1@comcast.net.
Additional information on the induction and information about the Bristol Sports Hall of Fame can be obtained on the hall of fame website bshof.org
This week, the Bristol Observer will take a look at a couple of these outstanding individuals as this edition will have a bit of a “Bristol Eastern-theme” to it.
Linsie Esau
When Linsie Esau came on the scene at Bristol Eastern, a peculiar thing started happening.
Both the football and basketball programs began to take off in terms of record.
A 1988 graduate of Eastern, Esau was a member of the Lancers’ football team and was a first team CCC South All-Conference selection and All-State pick.
A tri-captain his senior season, he was a National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete.
On offense, Esau was a split end (wide receiver); on defense, he roamed in the back as a safety, using his speed to track down opponents.
And his senior campaign was a special one as he made 61 receptions for the Lancers, establishing a new school record.
He once tallied 237 receiving yards in a game for the Lancers, 967 yards as a senior, and 1,200 for his scholastic career, which were school records at the time.
Esau had great game all along the campaign.
He tallied 186 yards off just six passes in Eastern’s 28-7 win over St. Paul during Week 2 of 1987 while one week later in a 25-15 loss to Hall, he gained those 237 yards off 11 passes from QB Steve Mills.
In just two games, Esau zipped up 423 yards off 17 passes (24.9 yards-per-game) and proved to be a tough option to stop.
He also excelled in basketball at Eastern and served as a team co-captain his senior year.
Esau averaged 17.2 points, six rebounds, six assists, and two steals-per-game while hitting on 80 percent of his free throw attempts for the Lancers.
No one was better than Esau from long range in the 1980s as he banged in 16 three-pointers over his career and scored 615 points overall for a lifetime average or 11.8 points-per-game in 52 career games.
Esau, as a senior, led the hoops team in scoring 13 times and on March 9, 1988, he had a career game at the best possible time.
The Lancers took on No. 8 Branford on the road and in a big upset, Esau flipped in a career high 29 points – hitting the go-ahead basket down the stretch – as Eastern went on to win 52-48 (don’t ask about the next game against Harding, the defending Class L champions…).
Before the Harding game, Esau had hit for double figures in 17 straight games and 22 of 24 overall to end his scholastic career.
He then went on to Hamilton College, where he continued to play and excel at the two sports.
Esau was a football tri-captain his senior season in 1992 and an All-NESCAC pick.
Over his colligate career, he totaled 1,463 receiving yards for Hamilton.
In basketball, Hamilton was under the guidance of legendary coach Tom Murphy and Esau helped the squad to an 82-9 record overall during his playing days.
Esau’s main contribution to the men’s hoop squad came doing his junior and senior campaigns.
He was a vital member of the squad when Hamilton was ranked the No. 1 NCAA Division III team in 1991.
That year, Hamilton finished the regular season with a ledger of 24-0, going 26-1 overall and was an ECAC Regional Finalist.
The 26 victories Hamilton ramped up a team record that still stands today while Esau’s squads also won an ECAC championship.
Ginny (Ziogas) Torreso
When the Bristol Eastern girls basketball teams were scooping up state championships, Ginny Torreso was a big part of the final two titles for the Lancers.
But it wasn’t all about basketball for the then-Ginny Ziogas.
She played four years of soccer, basketball and softball for the Lancers as a member of the class of 1991 and her basketball teams were Class LL champions in both 1990 and 1991.
She was named all-conference in each sport, was a two-time All-State pick in basketball, the MVP of the state All-Star game, and was named Connecticut’s Gatorade Player of the Year for girls basketball.
Torreso notched a total of 1,134 points during her basketball career, which included those two state championship squads.
At the time, only fellow Eastern teammate Kathy Ferrier and Lancers’ standout Laura Lishness tallied more points then Torreso did.
Currently, she’s sixth all-time in city history in scoring.
Over her two final campaigns at Eastern, the Lancers went a combined 46-3 and over that same time period, Torreso never notched fewer than 10 points in a game.
And she was also one of the Lancers’ top outside guns when Eastern wasn’t known as a three-point shooting juggernaut.
Torreso hit six of Eastern’s first nine three-pointers in school history and she is still ranked in the top 30 all-time in trifectas.
After her scholastic years at Eastern, Torreso took her game to an even higher level.
Torreso went on to play basketball at Pace University in New York and ripped it up for the Setters.
She scored 1,540 career points and dished out 378 assists for the squad.
In her senior campaign of 1996, Torreso earned several postseason honors.
She earned a spot on the All-NYCAC first team, was named the Pace University Female Athlete of the Year and was the NCAA ECAC Women’s Division II MVP at the championships.
Once she came back to Bristol, Torreso made her way to Bristol Central as both a teacher and successful coach.
Her coaching resume includes freshman volleyball, JV softball, and varsity basketball at the school on the hill.
At Bristol Central, she turned around the basketball program and made the Rams a viable contender in 2001 and 2002.
In 2001-02, the Rams were 13-9 and that would be the squad’s best ledger until current coach Steve Gaudet guided the program to an identical 13-9 finish.

Area restaurants help visitors get their food on this Saturday with Fest
By LISA CAPOBIANCO

Local restaurants in the central Connecticut area are gearing up for Bristol’s first-ever “Flavor’d Food Fest: A Taste of Bristol and Beyond.”
In July, Bristol Rising announced the launch of the event, which will focus on food entirely, featuring dishes from Bristol restaurants and organizations as well as other restaurants from other surrounding communities. Organized by Bristol Rising and presented by D’Amato Construction, The Hartford Courant Media Group, The Carousel Museum and the Central Connecticut Chambers of Commerce, Flavor’d is an all-day event centered on food that Bristol has never experienced before. Each food vendor will showcase two to three menu items.
Members of Bristol Rising said they hope Flavor’d Food Fest will become a success similar the Pop Up Piazza event that took place in 2011. The Pop Up Piazza brought at least 15,000 guests to Bristol, showing the possibility of a future “bustling” downtown, according to a pervious press release from Bristol Rising.
Mark Walerysiak, community liaison of Bristol Rising, said around 20 food vendors have stepped up to participate in the event. He said the event not only serves as a great way to introduce those local restaurants to visitors but also serves as a way for those businesses to become more acquainted with Bristol with the possibility of adding to the city’s economic development.
“It will be fun, charming, and quaint,” said Mark. “We encourage people to support local businesses that create what our dining environment is.”
Flavor’d will feature a variety of Bristol restaurants and businesses, including Barley Vine, Artist Tree Teahouse, El Sazon de Mama, Fuji Japanese Steakhouse, and Downtown Café, as well as Monterray, San Gennaro, City Sports Grille, and Sevi’s on North Main. Southside Meat Market and St. Demetrios Greek Parish as well as 457 Mason Jar also will take part in the food fest.
Mike Clawson, co-owner of 457 Mason Jar, said his restaurant will feature pulled pork sliders, barbeque chicken, and carrot cake. A resident of Bristol for 20 years now, Clawson said he hopes the event will market Bristol to outside vendors, showing them that Bristol is a destination for dining. He also said the event can show outside visitors that Bristol can offer some high-quality dining experiences.
“Hopefully it’s going to show that Bristol does have some quality restaurants,” said Clawson, who initially started his food cart business, Mike’s N.C. BBQ & Catering, across from the Court House on North Main Street in Bristol. “Hopefully it is a stepping stone for something bigger and better every year.”
Food vendors from outside of Bristol also will participate in the event, including Namaste India and Sixpence Pie Company of Southington, as well as 50 West of Plainville, and Matthew’s Restaurant of Unionville. Calabro Cheese Corp., a family-owned operation in East Hartford, will showcase a variety of cheeses during the event.
Patrick Miceli, owner of 50 West, said when he heard about Flavor’d, he knew the event would serve as a great fit for his restaurant, especially since Plainville, like Bristol, also has tried to showcase the downtown area as a destination for visitors. Miceli said he hopes the event sheds some light on what Central Connecticut restaurants have to offer, and looks forward to seeing the “crowd it is going to draw.”
Neils van Galen, executive chef of 50 West said guests will have an opportunity to taste several signature menu items, including the 50 West burger, fried oysters, and Cajun chicken sandwich. The 50 West burger serves as the restaurant’s signature burger, which consists of in-house ground beef, baby arugula, Vermont white cheddar cheese and fried onion rings, along with garlic aioli.
“I love that people are trying to give Central Connecticut a chance,” said van Galen. “I’m very excited we’re going to participate in this event.”
Meanwhile, Sixpence offer guests a unique selection of items from its menu, which features savory pies as well as sweet mini ones. From Shephard’s Pie to barbeque pulled-pork to spinach artichoke blue cheese, visitors will taste a variety of pie fillings, including sweet ones like banana with nutella.
Owners Kara More and Lisa Totten look forward to showcasing these pies during the food fest, especially for visitors who are first-time customers of Sixpence.
“I think [event organizers] have done a great job of picking out restaurants people haven’t heard of,” said More, adding how Six Pence has customers from all over Connecticut.
Besides food vendors, Flavor’d Food Fest also will feature a farmer’s market, beer and wine tent, food programming, fooducation, live music and tented seating as well as a grassy picnic and blankets area, and more. The farmer’s market will feature Grezscyk Farm, which offers a variety of produce, fresh eggs, honey and spice, as well as Connecticut Dip Lady, which sells dip, spice and soup mixes. The Flavored Olive, which sells flavored olive oils and vinegars, also will be a vendor at the market.
FOX 61 CT anchor and social media reporter Maggie Slysz will serve as the event’s emcee. Admission is free, and food tasting tickets will be sold on a one dollar to one ticket ratio. The event takes place this Saturday from 2 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Riverside Extension in downtown Bristol. The rain date is Sept. 14. Parking is available in the Depot Square lot adjacent to the event site, and in municipal lots as well as on the street where available. Handicap parking will be available and roped off on the southern side of Depot square, closest to the site of the event.
